Protecting Gene Therapy Access Must Remain a Priority as CMS Finalizes GLOBE
The Institute for Gene Therapy (IGT) released the following statement from Chair Erik Paulsen in response to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) release of the final rule implementing the Global Benchmark for Efficient Drug Pricing (GLOBE) Model:
“CMS’s decision to exclude certain cell and gene therapies from the final GLOBE rule is an important recognition of their unique value and the challenges patients already face in accessing them. As we emphasized in our comments, these treatments can address the underlying cause of disease and offer lasting benefits from a single administration.
“While we welcome this protection, we believe that GLOBE’s mandatory foreign price benchmarks will weaken the innovation ecosystem that makes these advances possible. Families confronting rare and devastating diseases need policies that bring treatments within reach and sustain the development of future breakthroughs. But foreign price controls undermine this goal and harm the promise of American science.”
